The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory making it mandatory for manufacturers of health supplements, nutraceuticals, and special dietary foods to display clear warning statements and specific plant-part details on products containing botanical ingredients.
The advisory applies to products covered under the Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Food and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016.
FSSAI observed that several Food Business Operators (FBOs) were failing to adhere to mandatory cautionary labelling under Schedule IV of the said regulations.
As per the FSSAI advisory, the FBO were required to explicitly declare the exact plant or botanical part used (e.g., leaf, fruit, root, seed), print clear, legible cautionary statements and daily dosage limits on the product label based on known side effects or contraindications, and avoid any claims or suggestions that a product can cure diseases, along with strictly limiting ingredients to those listed under designated schedules.
In consultation with the Ministry of Ayush, FSSAI has released a consolidated list detailing mandatory caution statements and adult daily limits for 16 botanical ingredients including Neem, Papita, Kundru phal, Kahava, Pathachoor, Gajar, Thuhar, Hibiscus (Gudahal), Krishnabeej, Chansur/Chandershoola, Trivrat, Tambula, Chitraka, Putrajivak, Ambat, and Inder Vaaruni.
FSSAI has directed all FBOs to immediately review their product formulations and labels to ensure compliance.
FSSAI warns that failing to comply with the statutory regulations will attract measures such as penalties, licence suspension, or licence cancellation. State Food Safety Commissioners and Regional Directors have been tasked with overseeing compliance across domestic and imported goods.
