The Food Authority has issued a declaration regarding veg and non-veg logo for source of ingredient including additives on the food label and stated that the food business operators have to declare the non-vegetarian logo in case any individual constituent ingredient of the compound ingredient was non- vegetarian in origin.
FSSAI says that irrespective of the percentage of compound ingredient of food, the food businesses have to declare the non-vegetarian logo in case any individual constituent ingredient has non-vegetarian origin.
The food authority has also directed the state food safety commissioners to ensure strict enforcement of the clause 2.2.2 (4) of the FSS Packaging & Labelling Regulations, 2011, in accordance with the clarification issued by the FSSAI.
The FSSAI has also asked the food safety officials to sensitise the manufacturing food businesses and give wide publicity to this direction on non- veg logo.
According to the FSSAI, it is the obligation upon the food businesses to make disclosure with regards to article of food being vegetarian or non- vegetarian, as stipulated under the FSS Packaging and Labelling Regulations.
It is pertinent to mention that the FSSAI was told by the High Court of Delhi to ensure declaration of veg or non-veg logo on packaged food article based on the source of the ingredients.
The High Court was told by the petitioners that the food businesses were hiding information on ingredients and despite many products having ingredients of animal source, they use veg logo on product label.
