FDA Goa organises ‘Eat Right Mela’ promoting healthy eating

The Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration, Goa, organised, ‘Eat Right Mela,’ a Healthy and Nutritious Food Festival on April 5, 2024, at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao. FDA Goa organised this programme to create awareness and promote healthy eating among citizens.
 
Modern times cause a more sedentary lifestyle, easily available junk food, lack of exercise, and rising non-communicable diseases that are negatively impacting most of the population. The food we consume has a direct relation with our health conditions. Hence, there is a need for creating awareness on eating right and living a health-centred lifestyle.

Eat Right India is the initiative of Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. These initiatives are implemented in the State by Goa FDA. To create such awareness on eating right and being healthy, FDA Goa organised the third edition of their Eat Right Mela, a healthy food festival, on the theme Eat Right Today for Healthy Tomorrow.

The programme was inaugurated by Sanjit Rodrigues, Secretary, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, in the presence of Collector South Goa, Asvin Chandru, and Chief Officer Margao Municipal Council, Gouresh Shankhwar, Nevil Alfonso, Director of Agriculture, and Jyoti Sardesai, Director and Commissioner, Food Safety.

More than 20 stalls showcased various healthy food items. There was a demonstration of healthy recipes by Taj Exotica, Benaulim. Food Safety Training and Certification (FoSTaC), training for the Mid-day meal suppliers and Session on Nutrition was held for the consumer clubs.

Competition on healthy recipes was held for the chefs in two categories -
professional and non-professional. Food Business Operators who had obtained Hygiene Rating Certification were felicitated at the event.

Goa Medical College and Hospital was felicitated with the Eat Right Campus Certification. Cultural programme by Goan artists and a renowned live band was also organised.
 
Sardesai said, “The country is faced with the dual burden of malnutrition and obesity. These alarming issues are the rootcause of several lifestyle diseases and are a burden on both the healthcare system as well as the country’s economy. In such a scenario, strategies promoting preventive care are of paramount importance. Eat Right Mela (food festivals promoting healthy foods) is one such campaign, which is part of the Eat Right India initiative of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The event is aimed to promote traditional, healthy, seasonal and sustainable food and to create awareness about incorporating healthy food in our daily diets. This is the third edition of the Eat Right Mela conducted by this Directorate. The previous mela was conducted on the theme of Millets as the year 2023 was declared as the International Year of Millets.”
