Food and beverage companies in the country reinstate their focus to food safety with total adherence to quality practices. There is increased focus on close monitoring across research, manufacture, distribution and marketing.

This year’s theme, ‘Food standards save lives,’ reiterates the significance of well-established food safety standards that play a vital role in ensuring the safety and quality of food.

Dr Veena Panicker, head - biomonitoring, Merck Life Science - India, said, “Implementing food safety practices requires a comprehensive approach involving various stakeholders including governments, researchers, manufacturers, labs etc. It requires enforcing stringent food safety regulations and standards at both the national and grassroots level. Regular inspections, monitoring, and strict enforcement of food safety laws are crucial. Investing in robust food testing facilities and laboratories equipped to detect contaminants, adulterants, and pathogens also helps in ensuring food safety. Regular surveillance needs to be conducted to identify and address potential risks. Education of consumers, food handlers and producers is key."

"Foodborne illness is a global public health concern. International agencies like WHO, US FDA etc., have already highlighted the inextricable link between nutrition, food safety and food security. In a diverse and widely populated country like India, there is an inordinate emphasis on hygiene and cleanliness, and food safety. The country is effectively working towards zero tolerance on food safety incidents by implementing advanced food safety and hygiene measures, to match the ever-growing demands and advancements in food technology. In India FSSAI is the  apex regulatory body and they are continuously trying to improve food safety parameters and testing methods both through vigilance and education,” she added.

Similarly Cornitos, the nachos brand understands that food safety is of paramount importance, and the company takes rigorous measures to ensure the highest standards in this aspect. They maintain stringent quality control measures at every stage, from sourcing raw ingredients to manufacturing and packaging. The brand adheres to all applicable food safety regulations and guidelines set by local and international authorities and stays updated with the latest industry practices and continuously evolves its processes to meet or exceed these standards.

They continuously prioritise training and education for its employees regarding food safety practices and conduct regular workshops and sessions for them. All staff members are equipped with necessary knowledge and skills to handle food safely, ensuring a hygienic environment and reducing the risk of contamination.

Recently, Cornitos organised an Awareness Programme that aimed to foster awareness and promote a culture of hygiene and adherence to food safety norms among all Cornitos employees. The company said that it remains committed to cultivating a safe and healthy work environment while emphasizing the significance of food safety awareness among its valued team members.

Dr Panicker said, “As a leading provider of reliable food safety solutions in India, we offer a comprehensive platform for testing food pathogens, contributing to the enhancement of global food safety and quality through efficient laboratory testing and regulatory expertise. Our objective is to equip professionals with the necessary expertise, tools and technology to enhance food safety practices and contribute to the overall well-being of consumers.”
