The Commissioner of Food Safety, Telangana, has cracked down on severe health violations at Lulu Hypermarket in KPHB Colony, Hyderabad, following an inspection triggered by a consumer complaint.
Food safety officials uncovered multiple hazards across the premises, starting with the hypermarket's in-house kitchen.
As per the Food Safety Commissioner, the investigators noted poor hygiene conditions, active pest presence, decayed vegetables, and leftover food stored inappropriately in refrigerators, which was immediately discarded. Additionally, near-expiry packed foods with torn or misleading labels were discovered.
In the retail area, inspectors found rampant insect infestations in staples like besan flour, atta, and dals. Several packed items displayed expired FSSAI licences, while others completely lacked mandatory nutritional info, manufacturer addresses, and licensing details.
Further, conditions in the butchering area posed a severe public health risk, featuring clogged drains overflowing with meat waste emitting pungent smell.
In response, authorities seized and destroyed approximately 150 kilograms of infested or non-compliant food items, including sweets, oils, flour, and pulses. Suspicious samples including the infested besan flour were sent for lab analysis to test for adulteration and excessive artificial colouring.
