Ths FSSAI has issued a direction regarding omission of the sub-regulation (4) of the regulation 7 of the Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018, related to labelling requirements for fortified food products.
The sub-regulation (4) specifies that every package of food, fortified with iron shall carry a label statement- "People with Thalassemia may take under medical supervision and persons with Sickle Cell Anaemia are advised not to consume iron fortified food products" According to the FSSAI, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) constituted a Committee headed by DG ICMR to review the advisory on Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Anaemia.
The decision to remove the advisory was based on the report of the committee which was approved by MoHFW and forwarded to FSSAI for necessary action.
The report was considered in the 44th meeting of the Food Authority. "Accordingly, in compliance of the above, the sub-regulation (4) of the regulation 7 of the Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018 is omitted with immediate effect," reads the order issued by the FSSAI.
