FSSAI extends timeline for complying with labelling norms
Tuesday, 14 December, 2021, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The Food Authority has decided to extend the timeline for the compliance of Food Safety and Standards (Labelling and Display) Regulations, 2020, and its amendment regulations of 2021, keeping in view other related regulations having different timelines for compliance.

These regulations will now come into force from July 1, 2022. However, the food businesses may use these provisions voluntarily until then.

According to the FSSAI, stakeholders made a representation citing extension of timeline of the said regulations for compliance as various related regulations, having labelling provisions related to the products including direction related to nomenclature of blended edible vegetable oil, FSS (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Food for Special Dietary Use, Food for Special Medical Purpose, and Novel Food)  Amendment Regulations, and direction regarding implementation of the food for infant nutrition are being enforced from April 1, 2022.

“The timeline for mandatory compliance of the provisions related to labelling only is extended up to 1st July 2022. Till such time, food business operators may use the specified labelling provisions on a voluntary basis. However, products mentioned in these notifications/directions shall comply with the standards and all other requirements specified therein,” reads the notice issued by the FSSAI.

It is learnt that the Food Authority has also considered a request from industry to maintain status quo in respect of the tolerance limit for label-declared quantity of nutrients currently specified in the packaging and labelling regulations of 2011, till the time a decision was taken on the finalisation of the revised tolerance limits.

The notice added that in the context of tolerance limit for  nutrients, the existing provisions of FSS (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011, shall prevail till a final decision was taken and “The compliance to quantity of declared nutrients on the label shall be according to the established practices,” reads the notice.
