The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has granted a three-month extension to food business operators (FBOs) to comply with new manufacturing standards for meat sausages.
Originally slated for enforcement on February 1, 2026, the deadline for the 2025 First Amendment Regulations has now been pushed back to May 1, 2026.
The directive follows significant feedback from the meat processing sector. Since the regulations were first notified in July 2025, various industry stakeholders expressed concerns that the initial transition window was insufficient to address complex operational shifts.
Industry representatives cited several technical and practical challenges in meeting the new compliance requirements, which include altering long-standing recipes to meet specific additive and protein standards mandated by the amendment, modernising the factory equipment to adhere to stricter preparation & hygiene guidelines, and clearing existing stock produced under the outgoing standards to prevent significant financial losses.
According to an official, the extension was considered to ensure the industry is fully prepared and once the rules take effect, every product on the shelf meets the upgraded safety and quality profile.
The original notification, issued on July 10, 2025, aimed for a February implementation. However, following the FSSAI’s revised timeline, the new standards will now officially commence on May 1, 2026.
