FSSAI issues list of processing aids; no action against use of such aids

The FSSAI has issued a list of processing aids that can be used by food businesses, and asked the state Food Safety Commissioners not to take any action on use of such processing aids.
"While food businesses may use processing aids listed in on technological grounds, the Commissioners of Food Safety of all States/UTs and all Central Licensing Authorities are hereby directed not to take any punitive action on FBOs for using the processing aids listed in Annexure that are yet to be notified for enforcement," reads the direction issued by the FSSAI.
The direction added that there may be delay in notification of all such processing aids as the list of active processing aids is still under consideration and until final gazette notification, the list was being provided to the food businesses for carrying out their operations on provisional basis.
According to FSSAI, several processing aids, to be included in the list of processing aids are being considered by the Working Group (WG) on Processing Aids and Scientific Panel on Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids and Materials In Contact with Food.
Many of these processing aids have been recommended by the Scientific Panel and are in the process of draft notification after the approval of food
authority while other remaining processing aids are still under consideration of Working Group and Scientific Panel.
Processing aids are substances used in production of processed food for various purposes as anti-foaming agent, catalyst, clarifying agents, anti-stick agents and so on.
