The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an urgent notice to the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) following a viral social media video showing catering staff allegedly washing catering utensils inside a train toilet.
According to the notice the incident occurred onboard Duronto Express N. 12223.
The regulatory body stated that if the allegations are proven true, the act represents "extremely unhygienic food handling practices" and directly contravenes Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011.
The FSSAI emphasised that washing utensils in toilet premises poses severe contamination risks, jeopardising public health and severely damaging consumer confidence in railway catering services.
Dr. Amit Sharma, Executive Director (Compliance Strategy), FSSAI, in the notice sought IRCTC responses and formal explanation on the incident.
Specifically, the IRCTC has been directed to furnish factual comments and a detailed explanation regarding the viral video, and to clarify whether the catering services were managed by a contractor/licensee and provide their FSSAI licence details, detail the immediate corrective measures and disciplinary actions initiated against the responsible staff or contractor and verify if the onboard food handlers have undergone mandatory Food Safety Training & Certification (FoSTaC).
The FSSAI has requested strict future compliance with statutory food safety regulations to prevent any recurrence of such unhygienic practices.
