FSSAI modifies labelling for infant nutrition; no RDA declaration necessary now
Saturday, 09 May, 2026, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Ashwani Maindola, New Delhi
The FSSAI has modified the labelling requirements for infant nutrition sector and now RDA declaration is not needed for infant food category.

Recognising that infant foods are often used under medical guidance, the regulator has exempted these products from declaring the "per-serve percentage contribution" to Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA).

As per the notification, per serve percentage (%) contribution to Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) and number of servings per pack may not be given for Infant Nutrition products as defined under the Food Safety and Standards (Foods for Infant Nutrition) Regulations, 2020.

This move aims to prevent confusion, as infant nutritional needs differ drastically from the standard adult percentage scales typically found on food labels.

Simultaneously, to boost the visibility of nutritionally enriched foods, the FSSAI has standardised the branding for fortified products in India. According to the latest 2026 labelling regulations, all foods enriched with essential vitamins and minerals must carry the prescribed logo along with the phrase "fortified with..." followed by the name of the nutrient.

Manufacturers are now also permitted to use the tagline "Sampoorna Poshan Swasth Jeevan" directly under the fortification logo. This branding is intended to help consumers quickly identify healthier, nutrient-dense options on store shelves.

The notification reads, “Every package of food fortified as per Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018, shall carry the words “fortified with ………… (name of the fortificant )” and the logo, as specified below, on the label and may also carry a tagline “Sampoorna Poshan Swasth Jeevan” under the logo.”
