FSSAI move to ban analogue paneer sale

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed a complete ban on the sale of analogue paneer made from constituents not derived from milk.
The move comes after several Indian states banned the manufacturing, sale, and distribution of analogue paneer, citing adverse health impacts and consumer deception.
In this regard, a draft regulation has been issued by the food regulator for public consultation, inviting comments and suggestions from industry stakeholders.
"FSSAI proposes to ban the sale of analogue paneer made from constituents not derived from milk. The proposal seeks to safeguard consumer interests and ban the practice of marketing analogue products as paneer," reads an official statement issued by the regulator.
The proposed amendment is titled the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Amendment Regulations, 2026.
The regulation seeks to restrict the manufacturing and sale of analogue products under the guise of paneer to prevent misleading consumers regarding the true nature and composition of the product.
Furthermore, products already licensed or registered under the "Analogue in Dairy Context" category will be required to discontinue the use of the term "Paneer" in their nomenclature, labelling, or marketing materials.
It is pertinent to mention that various complaints were registered with the FSSAI and the Union Health Ministry demanding a ban on analogue paneer.
In 2025, Union Minister Pralhad Joshi also wrote to the Health Minister seeking a nationwide ban on fake paneer.
