In a move to strengthen public health transparency, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified the "Labelling and Display First Amendment Regulations, 2026."
Set to take effect on July 1, 2027, the new rules significantly change how certain high-risk products are marketed to the public.
A primary highlight of the amendment is the requirement for pan masala advertisements. For the first time, the notified regulations mention that health warning statements must be "clearly audible" in broadcast media and "clearly legible" in print.
Additionally, the regulator has updated the mandatory declarations for artificial sweeteners.
Products containing blends such as Aspartame-Acesulfame salt must now prominently feature a warning stating they are "not recommended for phenylketonurics, children, or pregnant or lactating women."
Further, to assist manufacturers, the FSSAI noted that if a product uses multiple sweeteners, repetitive information is not required as long as the core safety warning is clear.
