FSSAI notifies norms prescribing limits for crop contaminants, prohibiting vet drugs

The food regulator has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Contaminants, Toxins and Residues) First Amendment Regulations, 2024, prescribing the limits relating to crop contaminants and prohibiting use of veterinary drugs.
For wheat, wheat bran, rye, barley, coffee the limit of Ochratoxin A, is 5 µg/kg while Deoxynivalenol limit for wheat, wheat bran, barley is 1000 µg/kg.
The FSSAl notification also lists 14 antimicrobials and other drugs, including steroids, used in veterinary practices, which are now prohibited to be used at any stage of production of meat & meat products, milk & milk products, poultry & eggs, aquaculture & its products, and the Extraneous Maximum Residue Limits (EMRL) of 0.001 mg/kg shall be applicable except for Chloramphenicol for which it shall be 0.0003 mg/kg (0.3 ug/kg).
Further, the notification also prohibits the use of any antibiotic during honey production.
However, in order to test the misuse of antibiotics, the antibiotics were specified with Minimum Required Performance Limit (MRPL).
The notified regulations shall come into force from April 1, 2025.
According to experts, the notification will help dealing with the growing challenge of antibiotics resistance developing in crops and food produced through animals like milk and poultry.
