The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Amendment Regulations, 2026. The update, published in the Gazette of India, removes regulatory restrictions governing the commercial sale of salseed fat.
Under the new directive, Clause (8) of Sub-regulation 2.3.14 of the master 2011 regulations has been omitted. This specific provision previously enforced strict conditions on how salseed fat—a plant-based alternative to cocoa butter in confectionery manufacturing—could be stored, blended, and sold.
Prior to this omission, regulations restricted its use to bakery and confectionery products and mandated specific refining and labelling declarations.
The final notification follows an initial draft proposal issued in late 2024 to invite public comments and objections from industry stakeholders. Following an evaluation of the feedback, the authority finalised the omission to streamline compliance for Food Business Operators (FBOs).
The amended rules take effect immediately.
