FSSAI orders states to initiate sampling and inspections of roasted chana products

The food regulator FSSAI has issued a nationwide directive to state food safety authorities and central licensing bodies to undertake urgent inspections, sampling, and testing of roasted chana and similar snack products, following reports of adulteration.

The order, issued on November 2025 under Section 16(5) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, targets the use of the synthetic dye Auramine a non-permitted industrial dye commonly used in textiles and leather processing that has reportedly been used illegally to impart a bright golden hue to roasted chana. Its presence renders affected products unsafe.

Under the directive, food safety officers are required to carry out enforcement actions across manufacturing, processing, storage, distribution and retail points, including informal vendors and e-commerce platforms. They must draw representative samples, which are to be tested only in accredited laboratories recognized by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).

State and central authorities have been instructed to submit a consolidated action-taken report within 15 days, detailing licence numbers, brand names, sample results and actions taken against non-compliant Food Business Operators (FBOs).

The crackdown aims to prevent health risks associated with adulterated food products and restore consumer confidence in commonly consumed snacks. FSSAI has also urged consumers to avoid purchasing roasted chana or related products exhibiting unusually bright yellow colour or chemical odour, and to buy only from licensed and reputable brands with clear batch codes and FSSAI license numbers.

With this enforcement drive, the regulator underlines that food safety and compliance remain paramount, and that any addition of non-permitted substances will be dealt with strictly under the law.
