FSSAI seeks report on action against FBOs using golden syrup in honey making

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has sought a detailed report from the state food safety authorities on action taken against the FBOs using golden syrup, invert sugar syrup and rice syrup in honey making.
The FSSAI has issued an order in this regard also seeking enhanced surveillance, sampling and enforcement to check the use of these syrups in honey making.
The apex food regulator has also urged the state food safety departments to conduct surveillance, sampling and inspection at regular intervals to the premises of the honey manufacturing/processing units under their jurisdiction.
In the order, Sanjeev Kumar, Deputy Director, Regulatory Compliance, FSSAI, has urged the state food safety authorities that details of surveillance, sampling and inspection activities undertaken be communicated to his office along with action taken report in cases of non- compliance by the FBOs.
The state authorities were asked to submit the report by June 26.
According to an order issued by the FSSAI in December last year, premises of honey manufacturing/processing units are required to be inspected at regular intervals. During the inspection, if any evidence or presence of golden syrup, invert sugar syrup, rice syrup in any containers/jars/receptacles is detected for which FBO is unable to account to the satisfaction of the inspecting officer, the concerned FBOs are required to be prosecuted as per the penal provisions of the FSS Act.
Further, the FSSAI in an order last month urge the state food safety authorities that to ensure quality of honey and to contain the misuse of imported golden syrup/invert sugar syrup/rice syrup in production of honey, all the importers/food business operators who are importing these food items in India are directed to also submit necessary documents at scrutiny stage, before clearance, to concerned Authorised Officer regarding details of the manufacturer(s) with end-use to whom the aforesaid imported food items will be supplied.
The order further stated that the authorised officers should carry out clearance of these products only after ensuring the necessary documents and fulfilment of other requirements of FSSAI. Also, the officers were asked to submit the details of the cleared imported consignments of these products with the concerned central designated officer to ensure compliance of regulatory requirements under FSS Act.
