The food regulator has proposed amendment to the Licensing and Registration Regulations to include definition of 'Primary milk producers' and hygiene requirements.
These regulations will cover individual dairy owners not associated to any cooperative who offer milk directly to consumers.
According to the FSSAI, the 'Primary production of milk' refers to the practices where milking machines are not generally used, raw milk is not chilled at the producer's level and/or the raw milk is transported in cans, if the same is distributed to consumers, door- to-door by the producer itself.
"In order to reduce the likelihood of milk contamination through inadequate primary production practices, the dairy operators should conform to the sanitary and hygienic requirement, food safety measures and other controls as specified," reads the proposed amendment, Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Business) Amendment Regulations, 2024.
The sanitary and hygienic requirements include environment hygiene related to shed, waste disposal, feed & water, hygienic milk production related to animal health, personal hygiene of the milking personnel, non-sharing of milking animals with pigs or any such animal which can cause contamination, animal hygiene, and handling storage & transportation of milk.
