FSSAI has decided to do a complete makeover of India’s street food culture, and after successfully implementing the Clean Street Food Hub projects across many places, the country’s apex food regulator has decided to modernise the street food vending carts.
It has floated a tender for the procurement of clean street food carts. The agencies/companies will be given the tender for the design and development of clean street food carts and empanelment of manufacturers/suppliers of the carts for FSSAI.
In the initial phase, the regulator intends to procure 2,000 model clean street food carts across the county. However, the number may go up to 10,000 model clean street food carts in due course of time.
It intends to make four types of carts, viz., a standard cart with a size of 8ftx5ft, a mini cart with a size of 3ftx3ft, a beverage cart with a size of 2ftx7ft and a fruit/salad/chaat cart with a size of 3ftx6ft. All these carts will have a proviso of mobile on wheels, printed flex and lighting.
“FSSAI invites an Expression of Interest (EoI) from the prospective agencies for the design and development of clean street food carts and empanelment of manufacturers/suppliers of these carts for supplying the model clean street food carts to the state governments, local bodies, municipal corporations, etc. across the country to raise the quality of street food vending to the level of food courts and established hotels/restaurants and to ensure the availability of safe and hygienic food to the consumers,” said the notice.
According to a senior official with the regulator, this initiative will help in upgrading the food streets and build trust among consumers to have a safe and hygienic local eating experience across the country.
“This will also revolutionise the street food vending in the country, making it popular must have for both domestic and international tourists while also preserving the rich culinary heritage of the country,” he added.
FSSAI also asked the interest participants to also participate in the development and design of the clean street food carts and supply of functional prototype of the same. The deadline for submission of the application is 1pm on January 27, 2020.
