Goa seminar discusses growth of wheat industry, focusses on malnutrition

A seminar on wheat and wheat products titled 8th International Seminar on Wheat & Wheat Products: New Ideas & Innovation for Growth was organised recently in Goa. The seminar discussed new ideas and innovation for the growth of the wheat industry focussing on the availability of food and malnutrition.

The seminar focussed on the role of wheat system in tackling two burning issues of sustained availability of basic food and combating menace of malnutrition amongst population. Various presentation, lectures, theme meetings and panel discussion were part of the two-day seminar. The meet provided an opportunity for exchange of ideas and information among stakeholders in different segments concerning wheat industry and allied sectors. Issues such as taxes and policy decisions were discussed at the seminar. An exhibition and display of various wheat products was held to showcase the growth of the industry.

Dr H S Gupta, director-general, Borlaug Institute of South Asia (BISA), inaugurated the seminar along with Ulhas Pai Kakode, director of agriculture, Government of Goa. During the inaugural session, the theme - New Ideas and Innovation for Growth was presented by N L Mehta, chairman, organising committee & executive director, Modern Bakery Enterprises Pvt. Ltd. Sunil Maheshwari, IAOM education committee members, International Association of Operative Miller (IAOM) also made a presentation. Nidhi Srinivas presented keynote address. Madhavi Das, chief management services officer, Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), released a handbook on Wheat & Wheat Products: Quality Dynamics.  

The seminar consisted of five important and informative sessions viz. Session 1: Wheat Production: Development in Indian and Global Market; Session 2: Food Safety & Regulations: Quality Dynamics; Ssession 3: Industry Game Changers for the Period 2016-2025 – Ideas and Innovations; Session 4: Wheat Products, Ingredients: Emerging New Technologies and Trends and Session 5: Panel Discussion & Valedictory and Honours. Eminent national and international speakers who shared their views during technical sessions at seminar included V K Bansal, president, Roller Flour Millers Federation of India; Ramesh Mago, president, All India Bread Manufacturers’ Association (AIBMA); J N Kushawaha, president, Society of India Bakers (SIB); D V R  Rajiv Mohan, VP, commodities, ITC Ltd – agri business division; Major Rajiv Yadav, VP, grains and oilseeds from Noble Resources (now COFCO Agri); Dr A Savitri, head, corporate scientific and regulatory affairs, R&D centre, Britannia Industries Ltd, H K Batra, MD, Perfect Bread; Saleem Veljee, director, directorate of food & drug administration, Government of Goa; Dr Ratan K Sharma, director, India Soy Food Program, U S Soybean Export Council, Inc; Lutz Popper, technical head, Muhlenchemie; Dr Subrata Dutta, country coordinator (India) from Food Fortification Initiative; Geoffroy d'Humière, Chopin Technologies (AGARAM), France; Agapito Menezes, president, All Goa Association of Bakers, S R Yadav, chairman, BTW India Pvt. Ltd, and Vinod Kapoor, chairman technical committee, IWS 2016.

Bakery Workshop
A bakery workshop was organised concurrently, which focussed on healthy baking. In this USSEC sponsored workshop, Dr Suresh Itapu, bakery technologist, AIBTM, highlighted the role of soy in bakery products. He emphasised that bakers can use soy in making different and innovative bakery products which would be attractive as well as full of nutrients. Shorya Kapoor, bakery technologist, Assocom Institute of Bakery Technology and Management (AIBTM), presented a live soy bakery demonstration which was well appreciated by stakeholders. Kapoor with his brilliant skill of bakery, showcased upon how the related industry can use soy in making different products. He prepared a number of innovative bakery products by using soy during his demonstration.

The event was organised by Wheat Products Promotion Society, Roller Flour Millers Federation of India, Society of Indian Bakers, All India Bread Manufacturers Association (AIBMA), Karnataka Roller Flour Mills Association and Maharashtra Roller Flour Mills Association. The seminar was supported by FSSAI and BISA and coordinated by Assocom India.  

Around 300 delegates from wheat and allied industries from different states of the country and abroad joined the seminar.
