Government cuts weekly wheat auction quota
Wednesday, 28 October, 2026, 08 : 00 AM [IST]
Our Breau, New Delhi
Despite a sharp and continuous surge in open-market wheat prices, the Central Government has reduced the weekly wheat auction quota by 5,000 tonnes for the upcoming auction on October 28, bringing the total allocation down to 1.01 lakh tonnes.

Trade leaders have expressed deep concern over the move, urging the government to immediately step up market supply through the Food Corporation of India (FCI) to curb rising food inflation and ease pressure on consumers.

Shankar Thakkar, National Secretary of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and National President of the All-India Edible Oil Traders Federation, stated that the market expected an increase in supply given the prevailing shortage.

"Wheat prices have been consistently surging over the past several days, leading to expectations that the government would enhance market supply. Instead, the weekly quota was reduced. Due to tight open-market availability, flour millers in several states are forced to pay over Rs 3,100 per quintal. We strongly demand that the government increase the auction volumes,” said Thakkar.

Thakkar informed that the average wholesale wheat price across India currently recorded around Rs 2,950 per quintal. With mandi arrivals dropping to near-zero in most states, flour millers have become almost entirely reliant on FCI stock releases under the Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS).

Millers are pushing for a gradual scale-up in weekly allocations to stabilise market sentiment.

Thakkar reiterated, "Because arrivals in mandis have virtually dried up, the government must enhance wheat supplies immediately to control soaring prices and provide relief to the general public amid rising inflation.”
