Government strengthens organic farming across Southern India

The Government of India continues to strengthen organic farming across the Southern States under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY), a key initiative aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices and improving farmers’ livelihoods. Introduced in 2015-16, PKVY provides structured support for farmers transitioning from conventional to organic farming, offering financial assistance and technical guidance to encourage eco-friendly cultivation.

Under the scheme, farmers receive financial assistance of Rs 31,500 per hectare over three years, with Rs 15,000 per hectare provided through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) for on-farm and off-farm organic inputs, including support for marketing of organic produce. This combination of financial incentive and market support seeks to reduce dependence on chemical inputs and foster long-term sustainability in agriculture.

In the Southern region, the scheme has been actively implemented in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, and Telangana. To date, significant funds have been released and substantial areas brought under organic cultivation in these states. Tamil Nadu has received Rs 62.36 crore covering 32,940 hectares, while Karnataka has secured Rs 100.49 crore for 49,100 hectares. Kerala has recorded Rs 67.33 crore for 94,480 hectares, and Telangana has received Rs 35.77 crore covering 8,100 hectares under the program. These allocations reflect the government’s continued focus on expanding organic agriculture in key agricultural states.

During the current financial year (2024-25), the scheme has directly benefitted 11,630 farmers in Karnataka and 28,983 farmers in Tamil Nadu, demonstrating tangible progress in farmer adoption of organic practices. However, Kerala and Telangana did not record expenditures in 2024-25, and consequently, no benefits were disbursed despite available allocations.

Additionally, in Kerala, organic expansion is supported through the Bhartiya Prakritik Krishi Padhati (BPKP), a component of PKVY emphasizing natural farming techniques, further diversifying the government’s sustainable agriculture efforts.
