The Government of India has allocated the highest-ever budgetary support of Rs 2,500 crore for 2026-27 under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) to strengthen the fisheries sector and improve the livelihoods of fishers and fish farmers across the country.

The allocation marks an increase compared to Rs 2,465 crore in 2025-26 and Rs 2,352 crore in 2024-25, reflecting the Centre’s continued focus on expanding fisheries infrastructure, boosting aquaculture production and supporting coastal communities.

Under the scheme, the Department of Fisheries provides financial assistance to states and union territories for projects aimed at strengthening fisheries and aquaculture value chains. These initiatives include modernising fishing infrastructure, promoting aquaculture activities and creating alternative livelihood opportunities for traditional fishers.

In the case of Tamil Nadu, proposals worth Rs 1,240.95 crore have been approved under the scheme during the past five years (FY2020-21 to FY2024-25), with a central share of Rs 479.73 crore. Out of this approved central share, Rs 202.05 crore has already been released to support fisheries and aquaculture development projects in the state.

During the current financial year (2025-26), the Centre released Rs 50 crore to Tamil Nadu in April 2025 under the scheme, followed by an additional Rs 20 crore in February 2026. Of the total Rs 70 crore released during the year, the state has utilised Rs 48.32 crore so far for implementing approved fisheries projects.

PMMSY also focuses on improving the welfare of traditional fishermen and small-scale fish farmers. The scheme provides support for acquiring modern fishing boats and nets, promoting sea cage farming, seaweed cultivation, pearl farming and ornamental fish farming, as well as deploying artificial reefs to replenish marine resources.

In addition, the programme offers livelihood and nutritional support during the annual fishing ban period, accidental insurance coverage for fishers and training programmes to enhance skills in modern fishing techniques.

The information was provided in the Lok Sabha by Union Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh while responding to a parliamentary question.

The government expects the enhanced budget allocation and continued implementation of PMMSY to strengthen sustainable fisheries development and improve the socio-economic conditions of fishing communities across India.
