Govt expands support for food processing infrastructure under PMKSY

The Government of India has announced significant enhancements to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan SAMPADA Yojana (PMKSY) — a central sector scheme aimed at boosting food processing infrastructure and catalysing value addition across the agricultural supply chain. The announcement was made in the Lok Sabha by the Minister of State for Food Processing Industries, Ravneet Singh.

PMKSY, operational since 2017, is a demand-driven umbrella programme that supports the creation of modern food processing facilities, cold chains, storage, packaging units and quality testing infrastructure. Under the scheme, applications are invited from across India for grant-in-aid assistance based on industry demand and availability of funds.

As of December 31, 2025, a total of 1,607 projects have been approved under various components of PMKSY. Out of these, 1,196 projects have been completed or are operational, collectively benefitting over 36 lakh farmers nationwide. Beneficiaries include farmers from diverse regions such as Rajasthan, Jammu & Kashmir and the Nabrangpur constituency of Odisha, contributing to enhanced farm-gate prices and increased profitability.

To intensify development further, the Cabinet has approved an additional outlay of Rs 1,000 crore for PMKSY. This includes Rs 500 crore each for setting up 50 Multi-Product Food Irradiation Units and 100 Food Testing Laboratories — infrastructure critical for ensuring food safety and expanding processed food exports. Expression of Interest (EoI) notifications for both components were issued in 2025 and remain open through February 2026.

Since its inception, PMKSY has generated nearly 4.7 lakh employment opportunities and strengthened the link between agricultural production and processing markets. By expanding the availability of quality infrastructure, the programme aims to enhance value addition, reduce post-harvest losses and increase farmers’ incomes across the food value chain.
