The Department of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, in partnership with the UT Administration of Lakshadweep, organised a major Investors Meet on “Investment Opportunities in Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector of Lakshadweep Islands” recently at Bangaram Island, Lakshadweep. The event was graced by Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj, along with Ministers of State Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel and George Kurian, and Praful Patel, Administrator of Lakshadweep.

The meet provided a platform for investors to explore the vast potential of fisheries and aquaculture in the pristine waters of Lakshadweep, which boasts 4,200 sq km of lagoon area and rich marine biodiversity. With tuna forming 75% of current catches, the region offers opportunities in deep-sea tuna fishing, seaweed cultivation, ornamental fisheries, tuna processing, cold-chain infrastructure, and offshore mariculture farms sectors poised for high returns and sustainable growth.

About 35 key investors from across India participated, including entrepreneurs engaged in tuna, seaweed, deep-sea fishing, waste management, and ornamental fishery operations. The event featured interactive sessions to discuss investor experiences, highlight challenges, and shape policy interventions to foster development.

Senior representatives from ministries, government agencies and scientific organisations — including NFDB, MPEDA, EIC, CMFRI, CIFT, CIFNET, NCDC, NCEL, FSI and local fishermen societies also attended. The meet aligned with the goals of the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which targets Rs 1 lakh crore in seafood exports and supports India’s emergence as a global leader in sustainable fisheries.

Officials describe the event as a major step toward realising Lakshadweep’s blue economy potential, enhancing local livelihoods, and contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
