Amul has taken a significant technological leap with the launch of Sarlaben, an AI-powered digital assistant designed to support dairy farmers and improve productivity across Gujarat. The initiative marks a major step in applying artificial intelligence to grassroots dairy operations, empowering producers with timely, accurate guidance on animal husbandry and farm management.

Developed by India’s largest dairy cooperative, the platform is integrated with Amul’s Automatic Milk Collection System (AMCS) and the Pashudhan application, ensuring seamless access to personalised information. Sarlaben offers 24x7 advisory support on cattle health, vaccination schedules, feeding and breeding practices, as well as updates on relevant government schemes and subsidies. Its design emphasises accessibility, with farmers able to connect via the Amul Farmer mobile app or through voice calls — catering to users with feature phones or limited digital proficiency. Gujarati is set as the primary language of interaction to maximise ease of use.

The AI assistant was launched by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Rajnikant Patel and aligns with broader national goals of leveraging digital technologies to empower rural communities and strengthen the agricultural sector. Patel highlighted the initiative’s potential to support women milk producers and transform dairy practices by making reliable, verified data instantly available at the village level.

Powered by decades of cooperative data, including milk procurement records, veterinary treatment histories and livestock information, Sarlaben is expected to serve over 36 lakh milk producers across 18,500 villages in Gujarat — the majority of whom are women. Together, these producers contribute more than 350 lakh litres of milk daily, underpinning Amul’s robust cooperative network. The extensive data ecosystem enables the AI to deliver tailored, farmer-specific recommendations that can help improve animal productivity and farmers’ incomes.

By integrating advanced technology into traditional dairy value chains, Amul aims to enhance decision-making at the farm level and strengthen its role in rural development, underscoring the cooperative’s commitment to innovation and farmer welfare.
