Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh recently inaugurated a major new facility in the fisheries sector with the launch of the Smart Green Aquaculture Farm and Research Institute along with a state-of-the-art Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) Facility in Kandukur Mandal, Ranga Reddy District, Telangana. The event was held in the presence of dignitaries including George Kurian, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Minority Affairs, Prof. S. P. Singh Baghel, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying and Panchayati Raj and Vakiti Srihari, Minister for Animal Husbandry & Fisheries, Government of Telangana, marked a significant milestone for Indian aquaculture.

The newly inaugurated facility is the first commercial-scale tropical Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS)-based Rainbow Trout Aquaculture Farm & Research Institute in India, demonstrating that high-value, cold-water species such as rainbow trout can be successfully farmed year-round in a tropical climate. This achievement underlines the importance of precision engineering, advanced water recirculation technology, and controlled biological systems in overcoming traditional climatic limitations for aquaculture.

Beyond production, the facility serves as a live training and demonstration platform. It equips youth and stakeholders with practical knowledge in advanced aquaculture systems, automation, and biosecurity practices — thereby building technical skills and strengthening human capital in the fisheries sector.

Earlier Rajiv Ranjan Singh also chaired the 12th Annual General Meeting of the Governing Body of the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB) at Hyderabad, Telangana. During the meeting, the Government of Haryana handed over documents for the transfer of five acres of land to NFDB to establish a Northern Regional Centre in Sultanpur village, Gurugram district. This centre is expected to boost aquaculture development in the inland states of northern India.
