On the occasion of National Milk Day the government released the BAHS 2025 report, presenting a comprehensive update on livestock and dairy sector performance across India.
According to the data — based on the Integrated Sample Survey for the period March 1, 2024 to February 29, 2025 — India’s milk production has soared to 247.87 million tonnes, up from 239.30 million tonnes in 2023-24, marking a growth of 3.58%. The rise in output, paired with expanded production from both cross-bred and indigenous cattle as well as buffaloes, has helped per capita milk availability climb substantially — from 319 gm/day in 2014-15 to 485 gm/day in 2024-25.
Egg production in 2024-25 is estimated at 149.11 billion eggs, registering a 4.44% increase. The bulk of this output comes from commercial poultry — nearly 126 billion eggs (84.5%) — while backyard poultry contributed around 23.1 billion eggs (15.5%). Major contributing states in the poultry sector include Andhra Pradesh (18.37%), Tamil Nadu (15.63 %), Telangana (12.98 %), West Bengal (10.72 %) and Karnataka (6.67 %) — together contributing over 64% of national egg output. Meat production too rose to 10.50 million tonnes in 2024-25, reflecting a 2.46% growth over the previous year. About half of this — 5.18 million tonnes — comes from poultry meat. The top meat-producing states are West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana — collectively accounting for 57.6% of output.
The wool sector also saw a healthy uptick, with production reaching 34.57 million kg, up by 2.63%. The states that dominate wool output are Rajasthan (47.85%), Jammu & Kashmir (22.88%), Gujarat (6.22%), Maharashtra (4.75%) and Himachal Pradesh (4.30%), together contributing nearly 86% of the country’s wool output.
Beyond production numbers, BAHS-2025 also provides granular data on animal population involved in milk production, egg-laying poultry, animals slaughtered, sheep shorn, and other infrastructure parameters such as veterinary hospitals, polyclinics, state farms and the number of artificial inseminations performed.
Officials say BAHS-2025 offers a robust statistical framework for policy formulation, evaluation of initiatives and planning interventions — strengthening India’s livestock sector for sustainable growth and improved livelihoods.
