In a strategic move to strengthen bilateral trade and global market linkages in the seafood sector, the department of fisheries, ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry & dairying is set to host a round table conference with ambassadors and high commissioners on seafood export promotions in New Delhi on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. The event is expected to spotlight opportunities for expanding India’s seafood exports and deepening cooperation with international partners.

The conference will be chaired by Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh and will include the gracious presence of George Kurian, Minister of State, and Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, Minister of State, MoFAH&D. Representatives from 83 partner countries across Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, Oceania, and Latin America & the Caribbean will participate, demonstrating the global interest in India’s seafood ecosystem.

India is recognised as the world’s second-largest aquaculture producer and one of the leading exporters of fish and fishery products. Supported by targeted policies and industry growth, the sector has transitioned from subsistence activity to a robust, export-oriented ecosystem encompassing aquaculture, feed, processing, cold chains, logistics, and value addition. In 2024-25, India’s seafood exports reached 16.98 lakh metric tonnes, valued at Rs 62,408 crore (USD 7.45 billion), contributing nearly 18 percent to the country’s agricultural export basket.

The round table conference will serve as a key diplomatic and technical platform to discuss sustainable and traceable seafood trade. Major themes include market diversification, regulatory cooperation, standards and certification, value-added processing, and digital traceability systems. Stakeholders will also explore opportunities in technology transfer, capacity building, financing, and strengthening supply chain resilience against climate and market risks.

Industry bodies, government officials, and international agencies such as the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA), Export Inspection Council (EIC), and global partners will engage in structured dialogues aimed at enhancing India’s footprint in the global seafood value chain.
