Indian crop sowing pattern shows mixed trends

India’s crop sowing pattern has shown mixed trends this season, with rice, Shree Anna and coarse cereals, oilseeds, sugarcane, and cotton recording lower area coverage than in the corresponding period last year, while pulses, jute, and mesta registered gains.
Rice area stood at about 405.10 lakh hectares, compared with 418.29 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year, marking a decline of 13.19 lakh hectares. The sharpest reductions were reported in Karnataka, down by 3.09 lakh hectares, followed by Telangana at 2.45 lakh hectares, Jharkhand at 1.88 lakh hectares, Madhya Pradesh at 1.75 lakh hectares, Odisha at 1.63 lakh hectares and Maharashtra at 1.50 lakh hectares. Lower coverage was also reported in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat. However, Assam recorded an increase of 2.80 lakh hectares, while West Bengal also reported marginally higher coverage.
Pulses, meanwhile, saw area coverage rise by 1.49 lakh hectares to 113.63 lakh hectares from 112.14 lakh hectares a year earlier. Uttar Pradesh led the increase with an additional 3.97 lakh hectares, followed by Telangana, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. These gains offset declines in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Odisha.
Area under Shree Anna and coarse cereals declined by 3.45 lakh hectares to 176.36 lakh hectares. Karnataka reported the largest reduction of 6.57 lakh hectares, followed by Maharashtra at 2.53 lakh hectares. However, higher coverage in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand partially offset the decline.
Jute and mesta recorded higher area coverage, increasing by around 0.10 lakh hectares to 6.34 lakh hectares. Bihar and West Bengal contributed to the increase, offsetting lower coverage in Assam and Andhra Pradesh.
Cotton area saw a marginal decline of 0.28 lakh hectares, falling to 108.45 lakh hectares from 108.73 lakh hectares during the corresponding period last year. Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab reported significant reductions, while Telangana and Gujarat registered higher area coverage, partially compensating for the decline.
Overall, the latest sowing data indicates a significant reduction in rice acreage, particularly across Karnataka, Telangana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Maharashtra, while gains in pulses and jute and mesta highlight shifting crop coverage patterns across key agricultural states.
