Indian food equipment sector sees tech driven transformation

Nandita Vijayasimha, Bengaluru
The Indian food equipment sector is witnessing a technology-driven transformation, with advanced coffee solutions reshaping the way hospitality businesses brew, serve, and manage coffee.

Vikram Khurana CEO, Kaapi Solutions, said one of the most significant developments in recent years has been the emergence of smart coffee machines. Equipped with digital interfaces, programmable recipes and real-time monitoring capabilities, these machines help businesses maintain consistent quality across every cup. For hospitality operators managing multiple locations, standardisation has become critical, ensuring guests receive the same experience regardless of where they visit.

As the hospitality industry continues to evolve, technology will play an increasingly important role in shaping the future of coffee service. Businesses that embrace intelligent, sustainable and data-driven coffee solutions will be better positioned to meet changing consumer expectations, improve operational efficiency and deliver memorable coffee experiences in an increasingly competitive marketplace, he added.

Coffee has evolved from being a simple beverage offering to an essential part of the hospitality experience. As consumer expectations continue to rise, cafés, hotels, restaurants and corporate workplaces are increasingly investing in technology that delivers consistency, efficiency and sustainability. The future of coffee is no longer defined solely by the quality of beans, it is equally shaped by the intelligence behind the brewing process, he said.

Automation is also transforming the way cafés and restaurants operate. As businesses face rising labour costs and increasing demand during peak hours, automated coffee solutions are streamlining workflows and reducing dependence on manual intervention. From precision grinding and milk texturing to automated cleaning cycles, technology enables staff to focus more on customer engagement while maintaining operational efficiency. The integration of artificial intelligence is further enhancing equipment performance through predictive maintenance, usage analytics and intelligent diagnostics that minimise downtime and improve productivity, Khurana told FnB News.

Noting that consistency remains one of the biggest challenges in commercial coffee preparation, Khurana said that variations in grind size, brewing temperature, extraction time and milk frothing could significantly affect the final cup.

Technology-driven brewing systems are addressing these variables through precision controls and automated calibration, helping businesses deliver uniform quality while reducing wastage. Such advancements are particularly valuable in high-volume hospitality environments where speed and consistency must go hand in hand, he noted.

Sustainability has also become a defining priority for the industry. Energy-efficient coffee equipment is helping commercial establishments reduce electricity consumption without compromising performance. Features such as standby modes, intelligent boilers, optimised heating systems and water-saving technologies contribute to lower operating costs while supporting broader environmental goals. As sustainability becomes an important consideration for both businesses and consumers, investing in energy-conscious equipment is increasingly viewed as a long-term operational advantage, pointed out Khurana.

Beyond cafés, digital coffee solutions are finding wider adoption across hotels, offices and co-working spaces. Connected machines equipped with cloud-based monitoring allow operators to track machine health, consumption patterns and maintenance schedules remotely. These insights enable better inventory planning, minimise service disruptions and ensure a consistently high-quality coffee experience for guests and employees alike, he said.

India's specialty coffee segment is also entering an exciting phase of growth. Increasing consumer awareness, expanding café culture and a greater appreciation for origin-specific coffees are encouraging hospitality businesses to elevate their coffee offerings. At the same time, technological innovation is making it easier for establishments to maintain high brewing standards while scaling operations efficiently, said Khurana.
