On the occasion of National Milk Day 2025, DAHD unveiled a wide-ranging set of initiatives and data releases, signalling renewed vigour in India’s livestock and dairy ecosystem. The event, held at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, was presided over by Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel, Minister of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, along with other senior officials and representatives from dairy cooperatives, milk federations and livestock farmers.
Key launches and highlights included the release of the latest edition of Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS) 2025, offering up-to-date nationwide data crucial for policymaking, and the unveiling of the new guidelines for minimum standards of veterinary infrastructure — a uniform four-tier framework to strengthen veterinary services across the country.
To boost breed quality and livestock productivity, nine breed-multiplication farms were inaugurated. Additionally, under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD), DAHD flagged off 20 modern insulated milk tankers, commissioned by Ropar Milk Union, with support from a JICA-assisted cooperative dairying component — reflecting efforts to strengthen the milk supply chain.
In a special ceremony, the ministry conferred the prestigious National Gopal Ratna Awards 2025 in three categories: Best dairy farmer rearing indigenous cattle/buffalo breeds; Best Artificial Insemination Technician; and Best Dairy Cooperative Society / Milk Producer Organization. The awards recognise excellence, traditional know-how and scientific husbandry practices in dairy farming.
During his address, the minister highlighted how per-capita milk availability in India has risen to 485 grams per day, surpassing the global average of 329 grams and underscoring the central role of dairying in rural livelihoods. He urged farmers to continue adopting advanced breeding technologies such as sex-sorted semen and in-vitro fertilization (IVF), and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening cooperatives and veterinary infrastructure.
The day also featured panel discussions under the theme “Enhancing Animal Productivity – Experiences from Experts and Progressive Farmers”, where stakeholders exchanged insights on improving livestock yields through scientific interventions and cooperative models.
With these steps, DAHD aims to consolidate recent gains in India’s dairy and livestock sectors, boost rural incomes, and ensure sustainable growth through better infrastructure, transparent data and focused support for farmers.
