The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare has released the latest figures on the progress of area coverage under Rabi crops as of 2nd January 2026, showing a strong expansion compared to the corresponding period last year. Overall, sowing of Rabi crops has shown vigorous growth, with the total area under coverage reaching 634.14 lakh hectares, which is an increase of 16.40 lakh hectares compared to the previous year’s coverage of 617.74 lakh hectares.

Among the major cereals, wheat sowing stood at 334.17 lakh hectares, showing an increase of 6.13 lakh hectares over the same period last year. Rice also recorded higher sowing figures with 17.57 lakh hectares, up by 2.67 lakh hectares.

In the pulses category, total area coverage rose by 3.44 lakh hectares, driven largely by significant expansion in gram cultivation, which increased by 4.66 lakh hectares. Other pulses such as lentil and moongbean saw modest increases, while some crops like fieldpea and kulthi recorded slight declines.

Among coarse cereals, maize witnessed a notable increase of 1.45 lakh hectares compared to last year, while jowar experienced a decrease of 1.26 lakh hectares. Coverage of other coarse cereals varied marginally.

Oilseeds also contributed to the positive trend, with total oilseed area rising by 3.04 lakh hectares. Rapeseed and mustard continued to dominate within this group, showing an increase of 2.79 lakh hectares. Coverage of other oilseeds such as groundnut and safflower fluctuated slightly.

These figures reflect a steady and broad-based Rabi sowing season across major crops, indicating continued confidence among farmers and favorable conditions for Rabi crop cultivation this season.
