The recently concluded India–United States trade deal has been described as “historic and unprecedented” that will give fresh momentum to the Indian economy, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan said during a press briefing in Bhopal.
Chouhan highlighted that the agreement goes beyond a typical commercial pact — it symbolizes diplomacy, development, and dignity, reflecting India’s rising stature on the global stage. He said India’s policy approach is based on “commitment, not compromise,” and the deal reinforces the nation’s strategic interests in the international economy with balanced and positive engagement.
A key benefit of the agreement is zero-tariff market access for a wide range of Indian agricultural products in the US, including spices, tea, coffee, coconut products, cashew, tropical fruits such as mango and papaya, and many other commodities that previously faced high tariffs. This concession is expected to significantly expand export opportunities for Indian farmers and exporters.
Importantly, the Minister stressed that no sensitive or harmful agricultural products — such as major staples like wheat, rice, pulses, dairy items, and other essential goods — were included in tariff-free concessions into India, ensuring domestic market security and protecting farmer interests.
Chouhan said the deal will not only enable greater market access but also help increase farmers’ incomes and support women, youth, and self-help groups by connecting them to global value chains. He added that such trade agreements are stepping stones toward building a more Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) and Viksit (developed) Bharat by 2047.
The Minister also acknowledged the role of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in advancing strategic trade partnerships that align with India’s economic and agricultural priorities.
