International Chefs Day 2026 honour chefs worldwide

International Chefs Day is observed every year on October 20, to honour chefs worldwide and promote culinary education, healthy eating, and sustainability. It was founded in 2004, by Chef Dr Bill Gallagher and is celebrated in more than 80 countries.

International Chefs Day is a global celebration of the culinary profession and the chefs who feed and inspire us. More than a simple appreciation day, it carries an educational mission: chefs are encouraged to share their knowledge and skills with younger generations and to promote healthy, nutritious eating among children. It is for everyone who values good food, from Michelin-starred professionals to school cooks, catering students and enthusiastic home cooks. Across the world, the day is marked with workshops, cooking demonstrations, school visits and community events.

Chef Ritesh Tulsian, founder & CEO, Echelon Hospitality, said, “Diners are knowledgeable and outgoing. Chefs play a more important role today than they did before. Diner's want to know the profile of the chef to get confidence in the brand especially if it's new. Chefs have to keep upgrading their knowledge and skills as social media can make or break any brand if they are too old school in their approach. Social media has increased the expectations of diners to the roof and chefs who are able to meet these expectations are able to create brands that stand out from the competition.”

Theme for 2026: Food Explorers
The 2026 theme encourages children and communities to: Explore where ingredients come from; Learn sustainable food choices; Build practical cooking skills; Understand environmental responsibility.

-International Chefs Day highlights: Culinary creativity and professional dedication; Healthy eating habits for children; Sustainable cooking practices; Preservation of global food culture.

International Chefs Day 2026 emphasises ingredient awareness and inspires the next generation of cooks. The heart of International Chefs Day is action, with chefs running hands-on activities for children and communities.

The Indian food and beverage market was valued at $332–510 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $691 billion by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 7–11 per cent.

“The biggest challenge today in the F&B space is skills set retention. Also, because of the high rate of attrition maintaining consistency is another challenge which the industry is facing. Ever rising cost of real estate is making it difficult to survive in the long run as the bottom line gets affected very badly. Geo political issues result in sudden increase of prices of imported raw materials, utility cost too. Beyond a certain point, the selling price can't be adjusted and the business owner has to compromise on his or her profits in-order to sustain in times like these,” said Chef Tulsian.

In an era where every bite of food can be an Instagrammable moment, the significance of chefs in the food industry has magnified exponentially. Chef’s do research that delves into the heart of the culinary industry. From discerning the demand for specific cuisines, clean ingredients, locally sourced ingredients, short term food trends, and more. Food is an experience, a form of art, the significance of understanding the world of chefs and culinary arts is of great importance to the industry.

Social media trends shaping the food industry include influencer-driven restaurant discovery, Instagram-led visual food culture, the rise of short-form video, and shifting platform features. These trends influence how diners choose restaurants, what dishes gain popularity, and how food brands structure their marketing strategies.

Short-lived trends in F&B industry
The short-lived nature of trends in the food and beverage industry poses several challenges and downsides: Missed opportunities: Brands may miss out on the potential for growth and profit by not capitalising on trending products that are expected to gain popularity; Increased competition: The rapid pace of trends can lead to increased competition among brands, making it harder to stand out and maintain a loyal customer base; Risk of misalignment: There is a risk of misalignment between product trends and consumer preferences, leading to poor product development and launch; Impact on Brand reputation: The failure of new products can damage a brand's reputation and credibility, especially if the product was not well-received by consumers; Need for continuous innovation: The industry requires constant innovation to keep up with changing consumer tastes and preferences, which can be costly and time-consuming.

These downsides highlight the importance of careful planning and strategic decision-making in the food and beverage industry to navigate the challenges posed by short-lived trends.

“Seasoned restaurateurs do not fall for trends of social media. The newbies in the business are impatient and get carried away by social media trends. The word trend itself implies that it will be for a short period so why follow the herd? These trends disrupt the market share unnecessarily by people who can't even boil an egg properly but somehow immature people fall in their trap in the name of being cool,” said Chef Tulsian.

Why AI matters in the food and beverage industry: AI is playing a crucial role in the food and beverage industry by enhancing efficiency, driving innovation, and improving product quality. AI in the food industry enhances efficiency, safety, sustainability, and personalisation, with major applications in demand forecasting, quality inspection, supply-chain optimisation, and customer experience.
“AI can help the industry with Table Reservation, Banquet Reservations, Recipe Documentation, Menu Designing, Menu Ideation, Competition Analysis, Menu Engineering, Payroll Calculations too. Chefs can take help from AI to keep themselves updated on ever changing demands of their target audience. Also, AI can help the Management to maintain their professional calendar to avoid looking at important deadlines & meetings,” said Chef Tulsian.

Future outlook for chefs
The food and beverage industry has seen radical changes over the past few decades – Global fusion cuisine; Gut health; Direct-to-consumer experiences; Personalised dining experiences; Revival of traditional cooking; Interactive dining; Use of AI in menu creation; AI operated cafes, and more.

Why international chefs’ day matters
Chefs do far more than cook; they shape food culture, support local economies and influence how families eat. International Chefs Day recognises a profession known for long hours and high pressure, reminding us of the skill, creativity and dedication behind every plate.
