International experts discuss food additive risk assessment ahead of 102nd JECFA meeting
Monday, 15 June, 2026, 13 : 00 PM [IST]
Nanjing, China
A Workshop on Food Additive Risk Assessment was held in Nanjing, China. The event was jointly organised by the China National Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) and Nanjing Medical University, with support from the Shanghai Junshi Institute of Life Sciences.

The workshop brought together leading experts in food safety risk assessment, including representatives from the secretariat of the joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and seven senior JECFA experts. Participants exchanged views on a range of topics related to food additive safety assessment, including risk assessment methodologies, the development of specifications, dietary exposure assessment, and the application of new approach methodologies (NAMs) in the evaluation of food chemicals.

In his opening remarks, Dr Liu Zhaoping, director-general of CFSA, emphasised the importance of strengthening food additive risk assessment and standards management in China. He noted that the workshop provides an important opportunity for Chinese experts to gain a deeper understanding of JECFA’s scientific assessment framework and recent developments, helping to further enhance food safety risk assessment and risk management capacity.

Prof Hu Zhibin, president of Nanjing Medical University, highlighted the fundamental role of food safety in protecting public health and noted that the workshop reflects the evolving nature of food safety risk assessment, characterised by multidisciplinary approaches, the integration of multiple lines of evidence, mechanistic understanding and innovative methodologies. He also emphasised the value of international exchange and collaboration in advancing scientific capacity.

The workshop was chaired by Dr Fan Yongxiang, deputy director-general of CFSA, and Prof Xia Yankai, vice president of Nanjing Medical University. A roundtable discussion moderated by Academician Chen Junshi, chief advisor of CFSA, provided an opportunity for participants to discuss JECFA risk assessment approaches and the potential application of next-generation risk assessment technologies in China.

The workshop was held immediately prior to the 102nd meeting of JECFA, which will take place in Nanjing from June 9 to 18, 2026, with the support of CFSA. The meeting marks the first time that JECFA has convened in a Member Country and provides an important opportunity for experts from around the world to exchange scientific knowledge and contribute to the continued development of international food safety risk assessment.
