Jack and Jill of America, Inc. honours Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy with 100,000-hour national service commitment to address food insecurity
Monday, 19 January, 2026, 15 : 00 PM [IST]
Washington, USA
Jack and Jill of America, Inc. announced a major initiative to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by renewing its commitment to community service and tackling food insecurity across the United States. The announcement was made on Dr. King’s birthday, emphasising the organisation’s dedication to dignity, opportunity, and care for vulnerable populations.

Recognizing the persistent challenge of hunger in one of the wealthiest nations, where millions of Americans  including children, seniors, and working families  face food insecurity, Jack and Jill of America launched the 100,000-hour service challenge. This year-long call to action invites its nearly 20,000 member households across 271 chapters to dedicate volunteer hours toward projects that fight hunger and strengthen community food systems.

The service challenge encourages a broad range of activities, such as supporting local food pantries, meal-packing events, neighbourhood food drives, and community partnerships. Families are urged to serve together, reinforcing the idea that meaningful, lasting impact stems from collective action and intergenerational engagement.

In addition to mobilising volunteers, the organization is committing $100,000 in financial support to nonprofit partners nationwide that are actively addressing food insecurity. This combines hands-on service with purposeful investment to create both immediate relief and long-term community benefit.

Tasha Penny, national programming director, highlighted that MLK Day of Service has inspired the group to extend efforts throughout the year, underlining that service should be ongoing rather than a single event. National president Darlene McGhee Whittington emphasised that teaching children to lead with compassion strengthens both individuals and communities.

Founded in 1938, Jack and Jill of America, Inc. is dedicated to nurturing future African-American leaders through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropy, and civic engagement and this new initiative reflects the organisation’s enduring commitment to Dr. King’s vision of justice, equity, and shared humanity.
