In a bid to bring organic (Jaivik) food to the consumers by educating farmers, Jaipur Rugs, which has been uplifting artisans and spreading awareness about conscious consumerism and organic certification for the last 40 years, recently conducted a seminar at Medh farm, 80km from Jaipur.
The venue is an example of farming in which horticulture is incorporated. In other words, its uses modern techniques to inculcate the old way of farming. About 50 farmers from across Jaipur participated and learnt about organic farming (Jaivik Kheti) at the event, during which a farmers’ club was initiated by addressing the benefits of working together as a community by sharing each other’s wisdom.
One of these was a lady named Sushila Devi, who hailed from a village called Chaksu. Generations of her family have been engaged in agriculture. She raised concerns about pesticides, and stated that she was ready to collaborate for joining the community which works towards healthy farm produces by applying Jaivik Kheti.
Farmers shared problems of working with chemicals in farming fields, water problems and less produce on their farms at the seminar, where engineer, therapist and TEDx speaker Darryl D’Souza conducted a two-hour session titled Small Changes for Big Impact.
Subhash Nalange conducted a session titled How to do Jaivik Kheti? He addressed how to use cow dung and cow urine to do it, created awareness about the use of complete green energy in farming field (using all natural resources like solar) and food processes, and spoke about how even excess waste can be managed.
Commenting on this meet, Nand Kishore Chaudhary, founder, Jaipur Rugs, said, “After making changes in the carpet industry with a socio-economic model, our next step is towards changing the way of farmer and consumer connection.”
“I want to develop a supply chain, where we will empower farmers and make them aware about direct market linkages, so that they are able to sell organic products directly to the consumer,” he added, stating, “I want to generate the consciousness of farmers, so that they can cater to conscious consumers.”
Farm fresh food was also prepared and served to the farmers during the seminar. This step was taken to generate awareness about the change in taste and benefits of consuming and selling products from organic farming.
