Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF)’s Nandini ghee brand will now be used in Tirupati laddus. It has now received the exclusive supplier status after quite a stir regarding this sweet, which is the most popular prasadam at the temple.
Brand Nandini stepping in as the exclusive ghee supplier is a significant move, especially given the temple's prominence and the recent controversies. Nandini's reputation for quality would help restore confidence in the prasadam.
Bheema Naik, president, Karnataka Milk Federation, who was elated about Nandini ghee becoming an integral part of the sacred prasadam, said, “Nandini ghee has become the exclusive supplier for the famous Tirupati laddus, with the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) planning to increase its order significantly. This comes amid the ongoing controversy over the alleged adulteration in the laddus made using ghee from other brands."
“TTD assured to raise its ghee order from 300 metric tonne to 3,000 metric tonne. Over the last 15 days, we have delivered 350 metric tonne, and they have assured us that the order will be revised to 2,000 to 3,000 metric tonne," said Naik.
The temple reportedly distributes at least 3.5 lakh laddus daily, spending over Rs 250 crore annually on ghee for the laddus.
Naik stated, "Tirupati TTD officials have informed us that only Nandini ghee will be used in the laddus made at Tirupati. It's a proud moment for us that Nandini, the pride of Karnataka, will be part of the Tirupati laddus. We are happy to serve the Tirupati Tirumala Temple."
It may be recalled that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu noted the usage of substandard ingredients, including fish oil and beef tallow, in the ghee used to prepare Tirupati laddu prasadams during the erstwhile administration led by Jagan Mohan Reddy. Lab reports confirmed the presence of these ingredients, leading to the cancellation of contracts with companies supplying ghee to the temple.
Karnataka government now directed that all temples in the state across its 31 districts need to compulsorily opt only for KMF’s Nandini ghee for making laddus or any other type of sweets as offerings. The move comes in the wake of the dispute over the laddus offered as prasadam at Andhra Pradesh's Tirupati temple.
There are over 35,000 temples in the state, which have now been ordered to mandatorily use only Nadhini ghee of KMF for making laddus or any other type of sweets as offerings, a government circular said.
"It is hereby instructed that at all notified temples that come under the Karnataka State Religious Endowment Department to only use Nandini ghee compulsorily for 'sevas' or services, lamps, preparation of all kinds of prasadams, and at 'Dasoha Bhavans' where food is served," the government order said.
