Krishi Mela 2024 gears up to display its prowess in digital farming practices

Krishi Mela 2024, an exposition to display the prowess of farming practices and digital technology, will now help farmers to integrate financial and field-level records for complete farm activity management. The major attention is on agricultural automation technologies, information on marketing skills and marketing of agricultural implements.

The event is scheduled to be held from November 14–17, 2024, at the GKVK campus in Bengaluru. It will showcase the latest agricultural implements and equipment, livestock products, animal feed, irrigation equipment, natural and organic farming and technologies to increase farmers' income.

Evolved around the theme of “Climate Smart Digital Agriculture,” it is being held in association with University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, Karnataka State Department of Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture, Forestry, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Agricultural Marketing, Women and Child Welfare, Krishisha Samaja and Karnataka Milk Federation at University of Agricultural Sciences, Gandhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

"In an age where technology is all pervasive, our intent is to highlight the importance of digital agriculture practices. Therefore drones and robots are already being pressed in to practice on farms. Our scientists and researchers at GKVK too have pressed into operation drones and robots in agriculture to perform a variety of tasks, including crop monitoring, mapping of fields with soil management practices, spraying pesticides, herbicides, and fertilisers, harvesting, sorting agri produce and remove weeds and mow farmlands," said Dr Suresha S V,  Vice-Chancellor, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru.

Highlighting the key focus areas of the mega event, Dr Suresha said, there will be integrated farming system demonstration of suitable crops for dry farming systems, demonstration of various newly released crop varieties, sericulture, horticulture crops and precision farming demonstration, medicinal and aromatic plants, cereals and its importance, watershed management, organic farming systems, integrated nutrients and pest management, soilless farming / hydroponics, new information technology in agriculture, advice from experts on agricultural technical problems to farmers, demonstration on crop response as per soil test, drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, rain and roof water harvesting and exhibition of improved agricultural machinery.

Further considerable attention is given to post-harvest technology, agricultural produce processing and value addition, testing and storage of sowing seeds, animal husbandry, dairy farming, sheep, poultry and fish farming, bio and renewable energy sources. "All these efforts are in sync with the developments of climate change and unpredictable rainfall, drought among others," he added.

At the five-day Krishi Mela, a slew of new varieties are to be released. These are Maize hybrid: MAH-15-84, Cowpea variety: KBC-12, Sunflower hybrid: KBSH-90, Bajra Napier hybrid: PBN-342. "In addition 19 novel technologies for crop improvement, production, improvement and agricultural engineering will take the centre-stage," said Dr Suresha.

There will be district and taluk level awards for the best farmer and farmer and farm women awards, which come under the jurisdiction of UAS, Bengaluru, these will be 10 districts and 60 taluks.

Around 700 stalls are part of the event to display agri implements, animal husbandry and new technologies. Scientific advise to agricultural problems for farmers by experts will be provided.
