Lunamo opens on Kolkata’s Sarat Bose Road

Kolkata’s Sarat Bose Road has welcomed Lunamo, a new dining and hospitality destination housed within a restored Old Calcutta townhouse. Conceived as more than a conventional restaurant, Lunamo combines food, cocktails, design and hospitality around the philosophy of, ‘Nest ? Renew ? Fly’, creating spaces designed for guests to pause, gather and reconnect.

Inspired by the moon and its association with rhythm, reflection and transformation, it seeks to offer a home-away-from-home experience for contemporary diners who are influenced by travel and global cultures while continuing to value familiarity and comfort.

The venue is spread across three levels, each representing a distinct stage of the experience. The ground floor, or Nest, features earthy tones, natural textures, wicker installations and filtered lighting. A courtyard connects the indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a relaxed setting suited to everything from coffee and lunch to extended conversations.

The first floor, Renew, introduces warmer terracotta hues, timber, handcrafted lighting and a central bar. The community dining space draws inspiration from cultures where food, music and storytelling have traditionally brought people together. The uppermost level, Fly, features a conservatory-inspired dining room, alfresco terrace, garden seating and an open pizza kitchen, offering a lighter and more expansive setting.

The culinary programme follows a similarly global approach. Rather than focusing on one cuisine, it brings together dishes inspired by culinary experiences from across continents. The menu includes sushi, dim sums, Asian small plates, artisanal pizzas, risottos, handmade pastas, wholesome bowls and desserts.

The restaurant follows a ‘glocal’ approach, combining international techniques with seasonal ingredients and regional influences. The menu has been developed through extensive recipe testing and refinement, with an emphasis on balanced flavours, ingredient quality and restraint. The dishes are also designed to encourage sharing and conversation, reflecting the venue’s focus on communal dining.

The beverage programme extends the travel-inspired narrative. At the Ground Floor Omakase Bar, the ‘Cuisine in a Glass’ collection draws from the journeys of a Bengali explorer, translating memories of destinations such as Morocco, the Mediterranean, Japan, Latin America and Southeast Asia into cocktails with Bengali influences.

The first-floor features “Classics Reimagined”, where familiar cocktails are interpreted using contemporary techniques, seasonal ingredients and local influences. On the upper level, the alfresco bar offers craft beers, zero-proof beverages and signature cocktails in a more relaxed outdoor setting.

Across its food and beverage offerings, it places emphasis on storytelling and emotional connections rather than spectacle. The concept draws on memories of travel and Old Calcutta through its architecture, ingredients, craftsmanship and hospitality, while avoiding overt nostalgia.

Owners of Lunamo said, “Lunamo came from a simple thought - life moves so quickly that we often forget to pause. We wanted to create a place where people could slow down, share a meal, have a conversation, and leave feeling a little lighter than when they arrived. The concept was inspired by travel, old Calcutta and the comfort of coming home, with the aim of creating a destination that guests would return to for moments of connection, renewal and togetherness.”
