Sangli, one of Maharashtra’s leading grape-producing regions, is set to strengthen its position in the value-added horticulture segment with the proposed establishment of a raisin research centre. The initiative aims to support grape growers by enhancing raisin quality, improving processing techniques, and boosting export competitiveness.
Known as a major hub for table grapes and raisin production, Sangli plays a critical role in Maharashtra’s grape economy. The proposed research centre is expected to focus on scientific drying methods, quality standardisation, residue management, storage solutions, and post-harvest value addition, addressing key challenges faced by farmers and processors.
Officials said the centre will work closely with grape growers, FPOs, exporters, and processing units to develop cost-effective and climate-resilient raisin production practices. Research activities are likely to include optimisation of dehydration technologies, sulphur management, colour retention techniques, and reduction of post-harvest losses. The facility is also expected to provide technical training and extension support to farmers and entrepreneurs.
Maharashtra accounts for a significant share of India’s grape and raisin exports, with Sangli, Solapur and Nashik forming the core production belt. However, growers often face issues related to quality consistency, changing climatic conditions, and compliance with stringent international standards. The raisin research centre is expected to play a key role in addressing these gaps by generating region-specific solutions.
Industry stakeholders believe the initiative will help improve farmer incomes by enabling higher recovery rates, better grades, and improved market access, particularly in export markets such as Europe, West Asia and Russia. The centre may also support product diversification, including flavoured raisins and processed grape products.
The proposed facility aligns with the state government’s broader focus on strengthening horticulture value chains through research-led interventions. Once operational, the Raisin Research Centre is expected to position Sangli as a centre of excellence for raisin production, supporting sustainable growth of Maharashtra’s grape and processed fruit sector.
