Marico Limited, one of India’s leading FMCG companies, has entered into a strategic collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Tirupati to pioneer sustainable technologies for extracting bioactive compounds from natural, plant-based sources. The partnership aims to strengthen the scientific foundation of healthier cooking oil solutions by integrating green extraction methods, advanced purification techniques, and robust efficacy and shelf-life studies.
This collaboration brings together Marico’s strong R&D and market expertise with IIT Tirupati’s research excellence, analytical infrastructure, and academic ecosystem, reinforcing a shared commitment to science-backed innovation and environmental responsibility. The initiative focuses on developing sustainable processes that can enhance the nutritional profile of edible oils while reducing environmental impact, thereby supporting the evolution of India’s value-added oils segment.
A key component of the partnership is being driven through the CII-ANRF Prime Minister’s Fellowship for Doctoral Research, under which a doctoral scholar from IIT Tirupati is working on sustainable process development. The research is jointly mentored by IIT Tirupati faculty and Marico’s R&D experts, ensuring a seamless blend of academic rigor and industry relevance. Marico is actively involved through regular technical discussions, reviews, and strategic guidance.
The collaboration has already reached a significant milestone with the publication of its first review paper titled “Aqueous Two-Phase Systems: Methods of Binodal Curve Generation and Applications”, which highlights innovative extraction systems for the separation and purification of bioactive compounds. In addition, a research manuscript based on experimental findings is currently being finalised for publication. Looking ahead, both partners plan to file joint patents and publish further research to strengthen knowledge dissemination across industry and academia.
Commenting on the collaboration, Dr. Shilpa Vora, chief R&D officer, Marico Limited, said that innovation has long been the cornerstone of Marico’s Saffola Oils, and this partnership marks a significant step towards advancing green extraction technologies. The initiative aligns with Marico’s purpose of “Make a Difference”, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable manufacturing, consumer wellness, and the future of nutrition.
