MoFPI & MSME Ministry for developing synergies for micro food processing

Ministers Harsimrat Kaur Badal and Rameshwar Teli, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), held a virtual conference with Minister for MSME Nitin Gadkari and held discussion on development of food processing enterprises.

The two ministries discussed ways and means to develop synergy between MoFPI and the ministry for MSMEs for the newly launched scheme for micro food processing enterprises.

The scheme will have a total outlay of Rs 10,000 crore wherein around 2 lakh self-help groups, farmer producer organisation, cooperatives and micro food businesses spread across the country will be benefited. The scheme is expected to generate around 9 lakh skilled and semi-skilled jobs and will be implemented over a period of five years from 2020-21-2024-25, in which cluster based approach will be applied focussing on perishables.

Earlier, Gadkari had said that government was thinking of creating a new category of " Agro MSME" under which MSME industries will be planned at Gram Panchayat level and such Industries will contribute towards the development of the respective village.

The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister on May 20, 2020, approved a new scheme for development of micro food processing enterprises. The PM said that this important decision will contribute to a vibrant food processing sector and it will also contribute towards Atmanirbhar (self-reliant) Bharat.

While welcoming the move, MoFPI in a statement, stated that the decision on scheme for formalisation of micro food processing enterprises shall provide a big boost to SHGs, FPOs, Cooperatives and working micro enterprises and ensure adequate livelihoods for rural-urban communities.

Previously also, the food processing ministers held a virtual conference with Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal and discussed issues pertaining to the development of food and marine processing along with ready-to-eat segment, as the Commerce Ministry has recently announced food processing as one of the sectors identified as champion sector.
