Nandini rolls out AI-based product counting system to boost dairy operational efficiency

Karnataka’s leading dairy brand Nandini is set to introduce an AI-based product counting solution across its production and packaging facilities, marking a significant step toward digital transformation in dairy operations. The initiative, driven by the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), aims to enhance accuracy, streamline inventory tracking, and reduce reliance on manual processes across key dairy units.

The new system uses artificial intelligence, machine vision, and advanced counting algorithms to automate the identification and tallying of dairy products — such as milk packets and curd cups — during packaging and dispatch processes. By deploying the technology in processing plants and distribution centres, Nandini expects to minimise human error, improve real-time inventory visibility, and enhance product traceability from production to retail shelves.

According to Nandini’s leadership, the AI-enabled solution will play a critical role in improving operational reliability while reducing labour dependencies. The automated system is designed to support daily operations, allowing staff to focus on higher-value tasks while the AI handles routine counting and tracking functions. KMF officials also highlighted that the technology reflects the cooperative’s broader commitment to embracing modern digital tools across production, packaging, warehousing, and logistics.

Implementation of AI cameras and automation technology is expected to accelerate workflow speeds and lower operational costs, particularly in high-volume dairy units where accurate enumeration of products has traditionally required extensive manual checks. Over time, this system may be integrated with wider supply chain management platforms and digital quality monitoring tools, further strengthening data-driven decision-making and audit accuracy across the dairy business.

This move by Nandini aligns with wider trends in the Indian dairy industry, where digital innovations — including IoT, blockchain, and data analytics are increasingly leveraged to enhance quality control, boost efficiency, and improve supply chain transparency. As the sector evolves, AI and automation are expected to play a transformative role in shaping future dairy operations and supporting cooperative growth.
The phased roll-out of the AI counting solution is expected to begin at major dairy facilities soon, positioning Nandini at the forefront of tech-enabled dairy production in India.
