The newly constituted National Makhana Board held its inaugural meeting in New Delhi, marking a major step toward strengthening India’s makhana (fox nut) value chain and enhancing farmers’ income. Chaired by Dr. Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, the Board initiated the implementation of a comprehensive central sector scheme aimed at modernising the makhana sector nationwide.

The Board reviewed annual action plans submitted by states and agricultural research institutions, and approved budgets for key components of the programme, which targets research and development, quality seed production, value addition, market linkages, branding, and export promotion. Emphasis was placed on strengthening infrastructure for essential post-harvest operations such as grading, drying, popping and packaging, as well as adopting contemporary cultivation practices across both traditional and emerging makhana regions.

To support states in meeting seed requirements, the Board outlined plans for consolidating supply through partner institutions SAU Sabour and CAU Samastipur in Bihar — while NRC Makhana Dharbhanga will play a key role in training trainers on modern production techniques. This collaborative approach is expected to improve technical know-how and skills among stakeholders involved in makhana farming and processing.

The Central Sector Scheme, approved in the Union Budget 2025–26, has an outlay of Rs 476.03 crore for the period 2025-26 to 2030-31. Its holistic design encompasses efforts to boost scientific research, strengthen seed ecosystems, promote value addition, expand market access, and prepare the sector for export readiness.

Officials said the Board’s roadmap sets the foundation for coordinated, market-oriented growth of the makhana sector, aiming to transform traditional production systems into contemporary, competitive value-chains that deliver higher returns for farmers while expanding India’s presence in global markets.
