In a significant boost to its infrastructure portfolio, NBCC (India) Ltd has secured a new project worth Rs 42.37 crore from the National Horticulture Board (NHB) for the development of the proposed International Potato Centre (CIP) in Agra. The award reinforces NBCC’s growing role in creating specialised agri-horticultural infrastructure across the country.
Under the contract, NBCC will take up comprehensive planning, architectural design, engineering, and execution of the centre, along with several ancillary works assigned by NHB. The project has been conceived as a world-class facility to promote advanced potato research, strengthen value chains, and support India’s rapidly expanding horticulture sector.
Officials said the centre is expected to play a key role in capacity building, research collaborations, germplasm conservation, processing innovation, and farmer training. Uttar Pradesh, especially western UP, is among the country’s largest potato-producing regions, making Agra a strategic location for such a research hub.
NBCC’s appointment as the project management consultant (PMC) highlights the government’s confidence in the company’s expertise in executing greenfield institutional projects. The PSU already manages several high-impact assignments in housing, agriculture, smart cities, healthcare, and educational infrastructure.
Industry insiders said the partnership between NHB and NBCC not only boosts the horticulture ecosystem but also aligns with national goals of sustainable agriculture, post-harvest efficiency, and crop diversification. The proposed International Potato Centre is expected to adopt global best practices and collaborate with international bodies working in tuber and root crop development.
NBCC said the new assignment further strengthens its position as a leading infrastructure developer for specialised sectors, especially those linked to rural development and food security. With horticulture emerging as one of the fastest-growing areas within Indian agriculture, the company sees this project as a stepping stone towards more sector-focused facilities in the future.
