A 16-member delegation comprising members of parliament from Nepal, led by Sanjay Kumar Gautam, former minister and member of parliament (Nepali Congress), visited Krishi Bhawan, New Delhi. The delegation, representing the Free Youth Democratic Organisation (FYDON), Nepal, held detailed discussions with Devesh Chaturvedi, secretary, Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (DA&FW), and Dr Mangi Lal Jat, secretary, Department of Agricultural Research & Education (DARE).
The visit provided the Nepal parliamentarians an opportunity to understand India’s progress in various facets of agriculture. The discussions covered key themes such as soil health management, fertiliser use, precision farming, irrigation, agricultural marketing, crop insurance, climate change adaptation, and farmer welfare initiatives.
Addressing the delegation, Chaturvedi, emphasised India’s focus on ensuring nutritional security alongside food security. He elaborated on major initiatives including Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), digitalisation in agriculture, precision agriculture, and risk mitigation measures that have significantly strengthened the farming community. He also highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and diplomatic ties between India and Nepal and reiterated India’s commitment to further strengthen cooperation in the agriculture sector.
Dr Jat assured the delegation that India is fully prepared to extend cooperation in agricultural science and technology through its vast network of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) institutes and agricultural universities. He underscored a multi-pronged approach for strengthening India–Nepal cooperation at the policy level, technological level, and by fostering stronger linkages among farmers and industries.
