The National Rainfed Area Authority (NRAA), serving as the knowledge partner of the Department of Land Resources (DoLR), recently organised a brainstorming workshop on "Satellite and Drone-based Survey for Watershed Planning & Monitoring" under the World Bank-assisted REWARD (Rejuvenating Watersheds for Agricultural Resilience through Innovative Development) programme in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
The workshop brought together policymakers, technical experts, scientists, and officials from across the country to deliberate on the latest advancements and practical applications of satellite and drone technologies for watershed planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.
Welcoming the participants, Dr. Susama Sudhishri, Technical Expert (Watershed Development) and Project In-charge, REWARD, NRAA, outlined the objectives of the workshop and highlighted the need to adopt advanced geospatial technologies to strengthen watershed development programmes.
Addressing the gathering, Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, NRAA, emphasised that the upcoming National Technical Guidelines (NTG) should provide clear guidance on the appropriate use of satellite- and drone-based surveys for watershed planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation across diverse agro-climatic regions of the country.
The workshop was attended by Dr. Joga Ram, IAS, Secretary and Commissioner, Panchayati Raj, Government of Rajasthan; Y.V.K. Shanmukh Kumar, IFS, Director, Watersheds, Andhra Pradesh; Kalpana Agarwal, Director, Watershed Development & Soil Conservation, Rajasthan; Dr. S. Bandyopadhyay, Director, MNCFC, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare; Sushila Yadav, Chief Engineer and Joint Secretary (Soil & Conservation), Government of Maharashtra, along with officials from other states, national institutes, government departments, industry, and non-governmental organisations.
According to the organisers, the workshop aims to generate expert recommendations for incorporating standardised methodologies on the use of satellite and drone technologies into the National Technical Guidelines.
These recommendations will serve as key inputs for the Watershed Development Component of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (WDC-PMKSY) 3.0, with the objective of improving watershed planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation through technology-driven approaches.
