Organic cert to rice row - APEDA suspends Sikkim organic cert body

The Agriculture and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority has suspended Sikkim state organic certification body amid reports of irregularities in giving organic certification to normal white rice.
As per news report, the rice was being exported as organic and was seized by the Customs Department while the Union Government has banned export of white rice and imposed a 20% duty on parboiled rice export.
It is learnt that the company involved in export of the white rice as organic rice and the organic certification body were both fined Rs 10 lakh, as well.
The Customs officials found the destinations, Vietnam, Mozambique and Kenya, suspicious as these countries do not import organic rice from India, while the US and the Netherlands are major importers of organic rice from India.
And, as a result, the international price of organic rice was constantly declining since October last year, wherein it was USD940 last year, which fell to USD529 per tonne in June this year.
